President Joe Biden has signed a landmark executive order aimed at supporting the development of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. The order emphasizes the establishment of advanced AI data centers powered by renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, to meet the growing demands of industries widely adopting AI. Federal agencies, including the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy, have been tasked with identifying suitable locations for developing this infrastructure. The initiative also invites private sector participation under conditions that ensure comprehensive use of clean energy.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, electricity demand for data centers in the U.S. has tripled over the past decade and is expected to increase by another 2 to 3 times by 2028, potentially accounting for around 12% of the country’s electricity usage. Therefore, the development of AI data centers must proceed systematically to minimize impacts on resources, such as water used for cooling the centers, and to balance economic growth with environmental protection. The executive order also requires private sector partners involved in the projects to cover all associated costs, reducing the burden on general consumers.
In a statement, Biden highlighted the critical role of AI in national security and improving quality of life, such as through medical advancements and addressing climate change. He affirmed that technological development must proceed responsibly, adhering to environmental standards and considering community impacts. The benefits of the order reflect the United States’ commitment to maintaining leadership in AI and reducing reliance on foreign technology.
