NTT Japan Reports Data Breach Affecting Over 18,000 Companies

Japanese telecommunications giant NTT Communications has suffered a data breach, impacting nearly 18,000 business customers. On February 5, the company detected suspicious activity in its Order Information Distribution System and promptly restricted access to contain the issue. An internal investigation confirmed unauthorized access, leading to a potential leak of business customer service information. However, individual consumer data was not affected.

The compromised data may include contract numbers, company names, contact persons, phone numbers, email addresses, physical addresses, and service usage details. However, smartphone and mobile phone service contracts managed directly by NTT Docomo remain unaffected. After detecting additional intrusion attempts on February 15, NTT implemented further security measures to block potentially compromised devices and prevent further damage.

This is not the first cybersecurity incident for NTT. In 2020, the company experienced a data breach that originated from a server in Singapore, which was later used to infiltrate Japan’s infrastructure, affecting 621 companies. In response, NTT has reinforced its security measures and continues to enhance its cyber defense strategies to prevent similar incidents in the future.
