Cybersecurity firm Group-IB has issued a warning to internet users after uncovering a scam involving fake gambling apps and deceptive advertisements on social media platforms across various regions, including the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. Criminals use AI-generated multilingual voices to enhance credibility, tricking victims into divulging personal information and losing significant amounts of money.

An investigation by Group-IB revealed over 500 fraudulent advertisements and 1,377 malicious websites designed to deceive unsuspecting users. These ads often promise easy and quick financial returns. However, once users click on them, they are directed to download fake gambling applications that have not undergone security verification by official app stores. These fraudulent apps are distributed via third-party websites or APK files. Once installed, the apps request sensitive information, such as credit card numbers, bank account details, and passwords. Cybercriminals then use this information to steal funds or sell it on the dark web. Additionally, the malicious apps can install malware on devices, granting attackers access to sensitive data or enabling further attacks across networks.

This type of scam is on the rise, with cybercriminals expanding their operations into new global markets, causing users to lose up to $10,000 per victim. The use of fake gambling apps highlights the misuse of AI technology in cyberattacks. Internet users are urged to exercise caution, avoid offers that appear too good to be true, and protect their assets and personal information against evolving and complex threats.
