Lumen has reported that it successfully blocked the Salt Typhoon hacker group, linked to China, from accessing its network, confirming that no customer data was accessed or leaked. Salt Typhoon, also known as FamousSparrow and GhostEmperor, has been active since 2019, targeting government agencies and global telecommunications companies. Most recently, the group infiltrated nine U.S. telecommunications firms as part of a cyber-espionage campaign.
Anne Neuberger, the White House cyber advisor, revealed that the attack focused on American metadata and communications involving key figures in government and politics. In early December 2024, reports indicated that Salt Typhoon had breached telecommunications systems in dozens of countries. Additionally, The Wall Street Journal noted that at least eight U.S. telecom companies had previously been affected.
In response, major providers like AT&T and Verizon confirmed they had strengthened their network security and successfully prevented the attacks. T-Mobile also stated that, while attempts were made to breach their system, the hackers were unable to access critical data or systems. This incident underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity measures within the telecommunications sector, which plays a critical role in national security.
