Microsoft has issued a notice to Windows system administrators that it will discontinue driver synchronization through the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) on April 18, 2025, 90 days from now. Drivers will still be available for download via the Microsoft Update Catalog but can no longer be imported into WSUS. Microsoft recommends that organizations transition to cloud-based solutions, such as Microsoft Intune and Windows Autopatch, to manage driver and system updates.

WSUS, first introduced in 2005 as Software Update Services (SUS), enabled IT administrators to manage and distribute updates for Microsoft products across large enterprise networks, ensuring centralized control for updating numerous Windows devices. WSUS acted as an intermediary, offering centralized update management instead of requiring each device to download updates individually from Microsoft’s servers. However, Microsoft has announced that no further development will be made for WSUS after 2025, although the service will continue to support existing update deployments. This shift reflects a focus on modern, cloud-based solutions to meet evolving needs.

To prepare for this transition, Microsoft advises administrators to consider adopting new solutions like Azure Update Manager, Windows Autopatch, and Microsoft Intune. These tools provide more efficient, modern, and flexible ways to manage devices and updates while simplifying system maintenance for organizations.
