U.S. Seizes Over $31 Million in Crypto from Uranium Finance Hack

88/68 Wednesday, March 5, 2025

The U.S. government has announced the recovery of over $31 million in stolen cryptocurrency from the 2021 Uranium Finance hack. The decentralized finance (DeFi) platform was hacked twice in April of that year, resulting in total losses exceeding $53 million. Hackers exploited a vulnerability in the platform’s smart contract to steal the funds, ultimately leading to Uranium Finance shutting down.

After the theft, the attackers used Tornado Cash and various decentralized exchanges (DEXs) to launder the stolen assets, swapping them for other cryptocurrencies and storing them in inactive wallets for nearly three years. The funds were moved again in early 2024, prompting renewed investigations. TRM Labs, which had been tracking the stolen funds since 2023, successfully linked the transactions to Tornado Cash and cross-chain activities associated with the hackers.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York and Homeland Security Investigations San Diego managed to trace and seize over $31 million in stolen assets. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) confirmed the seizure last week via its X (formerly Twitter) account.
